A Fashionable Christmas Ornament That Won’t Break the Bank Ornamental Mittens
With the current financial situation, more and more people want to cut back on their spending, and it seems that the topic on everyone’s lips this Christmas is how to make your money stretch that little bit further, without compromising on quality or on the fashion stakes. These are a modern Christmas ornament that is very inexpensive to make, and look like it has been bought in a Christmas boutique.
Mitten Ornaments
Ornaments like this are very chic; and you could easily make a batch of ten or more of these in under an hour. What you need is: 4 inch square of cardboard, pen, scissors, a piece of 8×14inch felt, floss, a little polyester fib refill (although cotton wool will do), and 4inch of ¾ inch wide white fur trim, a small tube of glue, and a needle.
Draw the shape of a mitten on to the cardboard and cut out. The mitten could be any size, but these look best when they are about two inches from wrist to finger tips, and an inch and a half from thumb to little finger.
Using this template, draw the mitten shape onto the felt and even number of times and cut each out. Pair these up on top of each other, and dab a fine line around the inside edge of the inner side of one piece (leave the wrist of the mitten unglued), place the other piece on top. Choose a piece of cotton floss with a contrasting color, and when the glue has dried blanket stitch around the mitten. Stitch on a loop of this floss to the wrist (on the side opposite the thumb).
To recreate the modern ornaments being sold similar to this, use bright colored felt and floss that contracts vividly with it.
Measure the length of the wrist, and cut a piece of the fur trim twice as long. Place a thin line of glue all around the two wrist pieces, and starting from the middle of one side, stick the trim around the wrist.
When this is dry, take a small piece of the polyester fib refill or cotton wool, and stuff the mitten.
These can be hung on the Christmas tree as a chic Christmas ornament, or attached to gifts for decoration, or even used on homemade Christmas cards. Other ways to embellish your Christmas ornaments would be to cut out other felt shapes like stars (perhaps using the same color as the floss), and glue them to the front of the mitten.
Another idea could be to create a large batch of these mittens in various sizes and colors. They could be threaded onto a long piece of brightly colored ribbon for a very modern garland that could either be hung up, or placed on your Christmas tree.
